Electric grids and the energy resources that supply them are experiencing transformational changes worldwide. The introduction of renewable energy sources combined with the retirement of traditional power plants is already affecting the functioning of the grid, the delivery of energy, and the cost to consumers. Electric vehicles are an essential aspect of this transformation, growing at 70% annually and predicted to reach 35% of global car sales by 2040. With the growing adoption of EVs, and of residential batteries, a wide array of unused battery capacity is being installed. As electric vehicles approach ubiquity, the energy stored in their batteries may be used to mitigate the difficulties of modernizing classic electric systems.
Nuvve Grid Integrated Vehicle platform (GIVe™) allows individual EV owners to change from being passive consumers of electricity to active participants in the functioning of the power grid. Vehicles become a truly integrated part of the electrical system not just as a new form of transportation, but as a new form of electricity storage capable of facilitating distributed power generation and addressing both local and system-wide imbalances. The aggregation technology used by Nuvve intelligently dispatches the power stored in the batteries of individual electric vehicles in response to requests and price signals from electric system operators. The aggregation system determines when and how much to charge and discharge individual batteries based on the current state of each vehicle, the preferences of the vehicle owner, and the needs of the electric grid. The aggregate power of a large group of EVs can constitute a “virtual power plant” capable of bidding into electricity markets and signing contracts with electric utilities. We can change how the existing electric grid functions, and facilitate the development of a smarter, more efficient electrical system.
Application & Benefits
Nuvve’s first roll out of its GIVe™ platform has been to aggregate the energy stored in electric vehicle batteries to perform so called “Vehicle to Grid” (V2G) services. The GIVeTM platform controls when and how much the battery is used or recharged. Nuvve has focused on providing frequency regulation to the Transmission System Operators (TSO). However other benefits are also made available to the grid and local distribution network with the ability to shift demand to a better time of the day, provide voltage support and power quality adjustment. Our ability to centrally manage the interaction between EVs, residential batteries and the grid can support integration of distributed and renewable energy to the grid, as well as generating profits through participation in existing electricity markets.
Profits generated by these activities will also benefit the EV driver or the residential battery owner, by lowering their cost of ownership.
Nuvve is now rolling out commercial projects.
2011: First demo on China Light Electric network in Hong Kong
2012: Test project between University of Delaware and PJM.
2013: Nuvve participating in research project in Denmark with DTU University (NIKOLA)
2015: Aggregation of 19,000 car chargers in The Netherlands jointly with The New Motion providing ancillary services to TenneT NL.
2016: Nuvve in partnership with Enel and Nissan is installing V2G charging stations and vehicles. This initial fleet of 44 vehicles will be providing frequency regulation to the Danish TSO (Energinet.dk).
2016: UK planned roll out.
